Since 2022, the Neighborhood Beautification Program has distributed 251 awards, worth a total of $3.334 million USD. This equals an average award of $13,285 per project across Detroit's vibrant communities.

There are around 726 Block Clubs and Neighborhood Associations in Detroit, each a vital piece of the city's transformation.

The grant provides essential funds for small public space improvements, such as turning vacant lots into gardens, art installations, and gathering spaces. The grant also sponsors clean-up efforts and overall public space improvements.

MUST BE a Block Club or Neighborhood Association owning valid land parcels in the organization's name

Non-profits and faith organizations can partner with block clubs for a grant proposal. Sponsoring entities must be an LLC or 501(c)(3).

Amongst other things, to apply you need:

  • Complete Wayne Metro’s online application.
  • Upload a simple line-item budget with only eligible costs, plus quotes or invoices.
  • Share the deed(s) for the property, held by an LLC or 501(c)(3) with the same name as the applicant.
  • Add a plot plan that shows what’s on the site now and what you plan to build or improve.

Specific application materials for for-profit versus non-profit organizations can be found on the funding website.

Cycle updates: Applications for the 2026 cycle are currently closed. Project contacts can be found on the NBP City of Detroit website.

Who Gets Funding?

Arboretum Detroit • Class Act Detroit • Cross Pollination Corridor Project • PR²OmiSE • Calyxeum Catalyst • My Community Speaks • Kairabowt • Thou Art Embrace the Rock • A Place of Refuge • College Core Community Development • Rescue MI Nature Now • Nature Squad • Camp Restore Detroit • Women of Banglatown • United Block Club Council

The goal for the first NBP year was 50 awardees, but only 34 organizations initially succeeded.

This gap highlights the historic difficulty Detroit residents face in accessing municipal capital, where complex application systems often leave community visions without funding and projects at a standstill.

Common barriers for the application include the mandatory  IRS 501(c)(3) non-profit status, the high cost of insuring public projects, land titles held by individuals rather than registered groups, and the expense and complexity of the city permitting process.

“Once they applied, they were told ‘the land you’re going to beautify has to be in the name of the organization. That eliminated all the block clubs in my community, which is East Canfield Village. That was kind of sad because people were very excited about getting these funds.” — Rhonda Theus, President of Canfield Consortium

‘Lessons learned’ after Detroit neighborhood grants miss most groups, Bridge Detroit News

  • Apply for the Lot Licensing Program - The city has partnered with the Land Bank Authority to sell parcels of land at a discount to eligible block clubs. If your organization doesn't qualify for the NBP due to lacking a parcel of land, be sure to apply!
  • Work with the Housing and Revitalization Department 1-on-1 - NBP housing officers have offered to provide more individual support for programs that aren't sure where to begin. Additionally, the Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency offers both technical and logistical support.
